Mark Making and Life Modeling

"The reason to draw a picture, as strange as it may sound is NOT to produce a picture, but to produce an extraordinary moment of existence."   Robert Henri

Life modeling requires energy, both tension and compression; take breaks when needed. This is a collaboration and I respect your ideas and limitations.

Although there are no hard and fast rules this video is a nice primer.

Typical Duration - 4 hours, breaks as needed.

Hour 1
Warm up Gestures. 1-5-minute poses which can be determined by the model. Selecting your own music and imagine large open poses of varying difficulty. If the pose is challenging, do not hold it long.

Poses may go follows:
I look away; turn or simply put my head down.
Discover a pose. When ready, queue me; Say ‘Ready’ or ‘Begin’.
I begin.
I may draw a lot or very little. Hold the pose based on your own determination and not my activity.
Enjoy the music and let another pose enter your mind. When you wish to do another pose say “15 Seconds” and release the pose. “15 seconds” being the number of seconds it will take to begin the next pose. So "20 seconds", "30 seconds", "10 Minutes".

Hour 2
5 – 10 minute poses – breaks as needed
Hour 3
10 – 20 minutes poses – breaks as needed

Anything is possible. Sometimes the session relaxing enough that models fall asleep. Other times dancing or use of the aerial silk works. Developing trust, however, is essential. This should be introspective, interesting and fun.

Stimulants (smoke and drink)

I won’t but you may. Communicate openly.

Locations

Option 1: Home Studio- Vallejo CA – Large private residence of my family's estate. A semi retired active, and very sweet 80-year-old attorney occupies this house. He is frequently either working, volunteering or travelling.

Option 2: City Studio- San Francisco CA – Rooftop apartment with sweeping views of San Francisco, the bay bridge and the Berkeley Hills. A very inspiring location – not always available.
